Beautiful antique Victorian choker length collar necklace made from genuine Whitby jet graduated carved dome shaped oblong beads with a centerpiece in the form of a Maltese cross, with box slide clasp with a jet piece applied to the top. Late 19th century, English. The centerpiece is slightly wider at the bottom and has a textured background surface, and applied faceted jet pieces. The necklace is strung on the original black thread. Guaranteed genuine Whitby jet. There is a hidden hook on the back of the centerpiece, to hold an optional pendant. Completely wearable as is; the hook does not show from any angle from the front. This style of jet necklace was very commonly made with and without a pendant. Fabulous without a pendant, and if you are lucky enough to have a coordinating pendant, even better! Wearable length is 14 1/2 inches. 1 1/2 inches wide at centerpiece. Excellent condition with some typical losses on the backs of some of the jet pieces at the drilled holes. These small losses are commonly seen on jet jewelry and are not visible from the front when the piece is worn. Display form is life size. Photos enlarged to show detail.
